US Government Crypto Wallet Hack - October 24, 2024
The Incident
In October 2024, a US government-linked address appeared to have been compromised for $20M, with $20M in USDC, USDT, aUSDC and ETH suspiciously moved from a USG-linked address on October 24, 2024. The alarm followed a previous alert that the same wallet had shifted around $5.4 million, marking the first activity on the wallet in over eight months.
What Happened Next
After the unauthorized transfers, the hacker quickly shuffled their ill-gotten gains, selling off the assets and laundering the proceeds through various addresses linked to money laundering services.
Connection to Silk Road Bitcoin
The US government shut down the infamous drug marketplace Silk Road and confiscated nearly 174,000 bitcoin, later amassing more than $1 billion in bitcoin holdings from the Silk Road. The US government currently holds around $13.7 billion in Bitcoin (BTC), approximately 44% of which came from the Bitfinex hack seizure in January 2022, with the remainder obtained through Silk Road-related seizures in 2020 and 2022.
Uncertainty About the Nature of the Event
With the duo's sentencing on fraud and money laundering charges approaching in November 2024, the timing of the recent hack has sparked discussion, with many speculating that the asset movements could be a planned liquidation by the US government or another potential hack orchestrated by the infamous couple.
Aftermath
Most stolen funds were ultimately returned to the US government addresses.
